Senator Calls on Energy Secretary to Resign Due to STOCK Act Violations

Secretary Granholm denied owning individual stocks and delayed disclosing stock sales.

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm testified before the  Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee this week regarding her department’s budget request for the coming fiscal year. During the hearing, Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri questioned her about her past financial dealings and conflict of interest.

Last year, before the committee, Secretary Granholm claimed to have divested all her stock in individual companies, though she actually still owned shares, as did her husband. Multiple times earlier in her term, the energy secretary had also not disclosed hundreds of thousands in stock sales within the mandated time frame under the STOCK Act.

“You neglected to report it to this committee for months afterwards,” Senator Hawley asked the energy secretary during the hearing. “Why did you mislead this committee?”

Secretary Granholm said, “I believed that I had sold all individual stocks, and I was incorrect. So, I came back as soon as I found out that, in fact, I had not sold all individual stocks.”

Senator Hawley stated that she misled the committee. He said, “This has got to change. And, frankly, you should go.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Senator Hawley and his colleagues on the committee as they oversee the energy secretary and her department.
  • For Secretary Granholm and all federal officials to be aboveboard in their financial dealings.
